Rival: Vanda the Unsparing, Prince of Fangs

Rank 4: Courtier.

Unsparing (adjective)

1: not frugal: LIBERAL, PROFUSE

unsparing generosity.

2: not merciful or forbearing: HARD, RUTHLESS

An unsparing satire. An unsparing critic. An unsparing prince.

Vanda the Unsparing is one of Zarkany's most prolific money-lenders. Vanda the Unsparing is aptly named.

They began as an accountant-knight for the House of Fangs, as its old military grandeur dangled over the cliff of penury. They pulled it from the brink with such adamantine focus that they were made heir.

Vanda the Unsparing does not love gold, or even like it. If power came from carrots (which makes more sense to Vanda the Unsparing than useless, soft metal) they'd bedeck themself in tubers.

Vanda wants to hold your heart in their hand and decide when it beats. Your money is their consolation prize.

Beliefs

  • Morality is God's to decide and partition. We mortals shouldn't distract ourselves with it.
  • A prince has no excuse to come to me for lending; the deck is stacked in our favor. My noble clients are fools.
  • Contracts are sacrosanct--they must never be breached. Everything outside of one is fungible.

Traits

  • Diplomat: Vanda knows how to run a negotiation.
  • Bureaucrat: Vanda's connections in the Fabrication District keep them well-informed of the new economy.
  • Accountant: Vanda's princehood is a useful ornament; but they're a businessperson first.
  • Gourmand: If you need it, Vanda can procure it for you.

Vanda's designs

In order of priority, Vanda wants to do the following.

  • Take over the Azagan Foundry. This is a Fabrication District factory, specializing in cookware, that is up and running smoothly but went deep in Vanda's debt to get there. Remuneration is past due, and Vanda is preparing to collect. 4-in-4 chance.
  • Get the House of Amber in their debt. There's a new prince on the scene, and one who's spending like he just won the lottery. Vanda is procuring Arpad's every wish--what do they care about how he got his patent?--and quietly tallying up the fee. 3-in-4 chance.
  • Procure a major Place of Power. Vanda wants a major place of power for their knight, Ivett, who they are quietly in love with. It would be the perfect gift--and a bountiful font of magic would aid Vanda's plans. 3-in 4 chance.

Vanda's knights

Vanda has two knights.

  • Ivett: Thin-boned and beautiful in a poetic, sickly way. Vanda and Ivett are years into a wordless, touchless romance that plays out entirely in their heads. Acting on it would be taboo; princes and knights do not do such things. Death mage, Spider mage.
  • Abel Levente: A former mercenary deep in Vanda's debt. The Prince of Fangs offered to wipe his sheet clean if he entered knighthood. He hated them for a long time after, but has finally allowed himself to enjoy the luxe life he's trapped in. Fusilier, Marksman.
